Fashion Dresses
Dresses differ greatly in their style and material according to when and how they will be worn. A day dress for the summer will be a completely different style to a winter evening dress, for instance.
Dress Styles
The style of dress should be appropriate for the occasion, surroundings and weather. The hem can be at the upper thigh or skimming the ground. Basic dress shapes include the sheath (fitted, and often sleeveless), shift (straight with no fitting around the waist), jumper or pinafore dress, sundress (in light cotton for the summer), and tent-style. An evening gown or ballgown will typically be longer and more expensive than a day-dress.
Formal Dresses
An evening gown or formal dress will typically be worn for a ball, gala, prom, formal meal, opera performance or other celebration. It will normally be floor-length and of a fairly simple, classic design. Formal dresses are usually worn with classic underwear, support underwear and perhaps a slip or petticoat.
Fashion Dresses
Dresses have been subject to fashions and fads just like every other form of clothing. For instance, Chanel’s little black dress first appeared in the 1920s and is still used asa staple of many women’s wardrobes. Tea dresses and flapper gowns were popular in the 20s and 30s. The Kitty Foyle dress (dark with white collar and cuffs) was fashionable in the 1940s. Dresses almost disappeared with the tomboy styles of the 1980s, but are now firmly back on the fashion radar.
