Garters

Garters don’t just have to be worn by blushing brides on their wedding night! If you love sexy underwear, then teaming stockings and suspenders with a garter couldn’t be more exciting.

A garter is an elasticated narrow band of fabric, worn around the top of a stocking or just above the knee. Garters were originally used to keep stockings up without the aid of a suspender belt, but they are normally worn as well as the suspender belt now, as an additional frilly adornment worn over the stocking.

Wedding Garters

Traditionally, a bride will wear a garter on her wedding day, along with her sexy wedding night lingerie. It used to be the case that the groom would remove the garter during the reception and throw it to his single friends; in much the same way as the bride throws her bouquet.

This was done to symbolize the “deflowering” of the bride. Traditionally, the man who catches the garter and the woman who catches the bouquet are expected to dance together. It was believed that taking an item of the bride’s clothing was supposed to bring good luck to whoever kept it.

Girls in Garters

Nowadays, girls in garters normally wear them for the wedding day tradition or as a fashion item. They are no longer needed to keep stockings up, as hold-ups have now become popular, but they are often seen as an essential addition to the stockings and suspenders set.

It has recently become popular for American girls to wear garters on their prom night, and for their partner to take the garter home as a souvenir.

Garter Belts

A garter belt is another name for a suspender belt, and fits around the waist with suspenders hanging down to fix to the tops of the stockings. This keeps the stockings in place.
