Hottest Fashion Trends of 2010

2010 was a daring and bold year for fashion. The fashion industry reflected the hope felt by the first signs of the world's economic recovery. Bright colors and eyecatching prints made an appearance along with extravagant accessories like oversized bows and multi-layered rings. Even trends that carried over from past seasons, like military and lace, appeared with a new 2010 flair.

1960's Are Here to Stay

The huge success of the TV show Mad Men has every girl wanting to dress like a 60's bombshell. Luckily, fashion designers provided women a way to live their fantasies with an onslaught of feminine dresses designed to accentuate curves and small waistlines a la the early 1960's.

Designers like Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs both sent granny skirts down the runway paired with fitted tops. Trendy kitten heels often completed the 60's ladylike looks. Some designers modernized their retro looks by adding another hot 2010 trend, the boyfriend blazer, over top of a classic 60's circle skirt.

1970's Sophisticate Glamor

The rise in retro fashion continued with the glitz and glimmer of the 1970's. The looks are flowing and chic, the accessories bold and unmistakable. Daytime looks incorporated 70's earth tones with high-waisted, flowing pants. For nightwear, everything became very Studio 54: shimmery metallics mixed with flowing dresses and severely plunging necklines.

Trendy Textiles: Lace, Leather, Velvet

Lace severely shied away from the grandmotherly days of yore and instead acted as a sexy and feminine fabric. Lace dresses, tops, and skirts created a very sheer and fashion-forward look.

Leather has appeared in the last few winter collections and just about every item of clothing imaginable has been made out of leather: capes, jumpsuits, vests, skirts, shorts, etc. 2010 saw leather in mostly monochromatic colors. Velvet was one of the most controversial mainstay 2010 trends and the fabric certainly brought an unmistakable texture and sheen to 2010 looks.

Underwear as Outerwear?

This trend is definitely not for the faint of heart. One of the boldest trends for 2010 was to show off underwear in high-fashion looks. 2010 runways included sheer blouses over sexy bras and negligees worn with Boho boots.

Exposed stay-ups and suspenders appeared in full force under shorts and short skirts. Bustiers, corsets, slips, and camisoles also played a huge part in this trend. For underwear and lingerie that remained safely under clothing, fashion trends included retro panties and 50's inspired shapewear.
