Health Socks
Believe it or not, specialised health socks can be used to soothe, relieve or even cure certain ailments, aches and pains. Even symptoms of diabetes, Achilles tendonitis and ankle injuries can be eased if you choose the right socks.
Diabetic Socks
One of the possible side-effects of some forms of diabetes is a condition known as “peripheral neuropathy”. This often presents itself as a numbness or lack of feeling in the feet, and can have serious consequences. As well as making the sufferer uncomfortable and affecting walking, injuries and chafing can go unnoticed, resulting in infection or even permanent damage.
Diabetic socks are designed to be as comfortable as possible for vulnerable feet. They are light and soft, made from a cotton / Lycra mix, which reduces the risk of chafing and blisters. They also have loose, non-elastic tops so as not to restrict the blood supply to the feet.
Achilles Tendon Support Socks
There are also socks available to ease the pain of those suffering from Achilles tendonitis. These are normally referred to as the Strassburg Sock. They’re designed to give the wearer’s calf muscle a gentle stretch while at rest, reducing tension on the tendon itself. Achilles tendon support socks must be used carefully, and the instruction should be followed to the letter to avoid causing further pain or injury. If you try out these socks and your symptoms worsen, stop using them straight away.
Ankle Support Socks
The pain of an ankle injury or ankle arthritis can be eased with ankle support socks. These offer gentle cushioning and support to the back and sides of the ankle, and normally the bridge of the foot as well. They are normally worn for gentle sporting activities while the wearer is recovering from an injury, but can be worn for everyday ankle arthritis as well.
