Vests
Known as undershirts in the US, we ask has the vest has dropped out of fashion? Gone are the days of Bruce Willis saving people in his vest, but he looked pretty cool and vest are useful items of clothing and we think an item of fashion that needs to make a come back. We might even start a campaign on facebook, Downing Street or Vogue.
Vests are often seen as pointless these days, but they were originally worn to save dress shirts from sweat and smells, to keep the wearer warm in the winter, and to preserve his modesty when wearing a thin, lightly-coloured shirt. What could be more practical and handy to have in your wardrobe?
By the 1990s, vests were starting to disappear from the shops, and are now relegated to the kind of department stores elderly women visit to buy clothes for their husbands. We’re telling you, this is a massive shame, and we expect the vest to be modernised and feature in fashion collections no later than 2010.
Vest styles
Vests are normally sleeveless, and made of white cotton or a comfortable cotton mix. T-shirt style vests were once popular but have all but disappeared now, replaced with t-shirts made as outerwear. Women’s vests are also most likely to be cami- style tops intended as outerwear but worn underneath a shirt or jumper.
Those female vests that are fashionable and worn with jeans or a skirt tend to be in short supply of design idea’s and normal fashion tops have been labelled vests to differentiate them from normal causal summer tops.
Fashion Vests
If you’re particularly proud of your upper body you could choose a fashion vest, which is the same style and cut as the traditional underwear vest but worn on its own or with an open shirt over the top. A quick word of warning from the team at YSN if you’re thinking of getting a fashion vest for the summer months, you’d better start using that gym membership.
Sweater Vests
A sweater vest, or sleeveless sweater, is better known in the UK as a tank top. They were the height of fashion in the 1970s and can still look stylish today if worn with the right clothes and accessories. But, if you’re old enough to remember them from the first time around, it’s probably best if you don’t bother this time.
A final type of vest is a Thermal vest.
