Shorts

Shorts are the ultimate unisex summer fashion. Ranging from hot pants to Bermuda-style length, they’re versatile, comfortable and cooling. Shorts began life in the 19th century as clothing for young boys, which they would eventually grow out of and start wearing full-length trousers. Perhaps for this reason, and because they’re associated with the summer, shorts wearers are seen as a youthful and carefree.

Shorts are seen as casual wear, because wearing shorts usually exposes a fair bit of flesh. This doesn’t normally pose a problem, but if you’re buying shorts for a foreign holiday you should check whether the area you’re visiting finds them acceptable. Many countries, especially intensely religious ones, will ask you to cover up.

Tight Shorts

On women, tight shorts are a great alternative to a mini skirt. Normally made from denim or a cotton mix, a tight pair of shorts can be a very sexy look on women who aren’t afraid to show a bit of thigh. Just remember Kylie in her “spinning around” video. This doesn’t generally apply to men though – sorry, guys.

Khaki Shorts

For the safari trekker in you, khaki shorts tend to be looser and more comfortable than other types, often with a cargo look and pockets. Because of their light colouring and natural materials, they are perfect for hot summer days. Practical and stylish they should be part of any shorts collection.

Spandex Shorts

Tight cycling shorts are normally made with spandex, giving the wearer added comfort and flexibility. Because they are skin-tight, spandex shorts normally prevent or reduce chafing while cycling, but they can also be worn as a women’s fashion item, usually underneath a short skirt.

Fashion Shorts

Fashions in shorts change every summer. For women, a smart pair of fashion shorts will normally be a dark colour and can be worn with tights on cooler days. For men, board shorts (a combination of swimwear and daywear, made popular by surfers) are often in fashion, but older men might prefer something a bit smarter.
