Thermals

Thermal underwear is made from layers of material that trap the wearer’s body heat to keep them warm. It was invented in the 18th century by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Romford, who spent his life studying thermodynamics and the retention of heat to create the many types of thermal wear available today.

Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear is definitely not supposed to be sexy or naughty in any way. Highly practical in every sense, it usually covers the wearer’s whole body, from ankles to wrists to neck. There are two main types of thermal underwear: the ‘union suit’ and the long john.

The union suit is a one-piece design, similar to a babygro, but the more popular choice is separate top and bottom halves, known as long johns. Thermal underwear is normally made from cotton or a cotton / polyester mix with a box-weave texture. Alternative materials include flannel and polypropylene.

Thermal Gloves

Because the principles of thermal clothing are based around trapping warm air, the idea is that as long as something is made from the right material, it doesn’t need to be thick. For this reason, thermal gloves are the perfect choice for people who want to keep their hands warm but still be able to feel what they are doing.

Thermal inner gloves are also available to fit underneath padded or armoured gloves for motorbike riders: they give extra warmth and comfort during the winter months but can be removed in summer.

Thermal Shirts

Thermal shirts are the practical alternative for people who work or play in cold weather but don’t want to go the ‘thermal underwear’ route! Thermal shirts can be stylish as well as warm and heard-wearing, and are often used as part of the uniform for outdoor workers and members of the armed forces. A simple thermal top can make the difference between a productive day at work and an uncomfortable and tiring one.

You can find thermal fashion shirts, but you may find your dad beat you too it!

Have you heard of thermal leggins ?, no nor have we!
